What is the Media Reporting?

Members of the media have come out against the FAA's conduct during contract negotiations.

Salt Lake Tribune (The Thumb)- July 26
"If you are in the cabin of a jumbo jet hurtling high above the earth at great speed, the last thing you want to hear is the pilot get into a nasty argument with the co-pilot. Almost as bad is the very public PR feud that has opened up between the FAA and the union that represents the nation's air traffic controllers as the two try to negotiate a new contract. Transparency in government is a good thing. But this unnecessarily hostile attitude, apparently copped first by the government, is not reassuring in the least."

Paying controllers

As the proud daughter of an air traffic controller, I found the FAA's proposed pay cuts to be appalling ["FAA: Controllers' salaries too high," News, July 14]. The FAA degrades a job that few people have the mental stamina and dedication to do. To cut controllers' salaries would be a disgrace both to them and to the thousands of travelers they protect every day.

Chicago ABC Ch. 7 - CBS Aviation Expert Jim Tilmon
Tilmon: "I mean, that sounds kind of ridiculous, certainly there is a limit to everything, but when you consider the job these people are doing, and with the number of people they have to do it with and the equipment they have available to them and the fact of the government made an agreement in 1998. That they agreed to, and extended that agreement two years ago, it makes you wonder, really, what the … is going on with the government and their air traffic controllers. I only have to say this about it, too. In Chicago, I said nice things about the fire department yesterday, I gotta tell you, we have the best controllers in the world. If I ever had a problem this is where I wanted to come, and I want those people to be happy. I don’t want them to worry about their mortgage if I’ve got an engine on fire, and I’m coming in on short final in bad weather. So, I’m not trying to argue their point, but I do, I’m concerned about why the FAA would have a public announcement before they’ve even started to negotiate with the union."
