A Staffing Problem: By The Numbers

 

SAN JOSE AIRPORT AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER

  1. The facility is authorized to have 20 controllers on board, according to the FAA.
  2. Currently, there are 18 certified professional controllers (CPCs, fully trained) on board.
  3. The facility will lose three controllers in the first six months of 2006, according to the facility’s FAA manager.
  4. Two controllers are currently eligible to retire and preparing to leave soon.

 

OAKLAND AIRPORT AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER

  • The facility is authorized to have 33 controllers on board, according to the FAA.
  • Currently, there are 27 controllers on board, including 25 CPCs and one trainee. One controller is medically disqualified from working.
  • The facility will lose two controllers by next May, including one retirement.
  • Eight controllers are currently eligible to retire.
  • Over the next 18 months, 19 controllers will reach retirement eligibility.

NOTE: To become eligible to retire, a controller must either have worked 20 years and reach 50 years of age, or worked 25 years and be any age)
