A Staffing Problem: By The Numbers
SAN JOSE AIRPORT AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER
- The facility is authorized to have 20 controllers on board, according to the FAA.
- Currently, there are 18 certified professional controllers (CPCs, fully trained) on board.
- The facility will lose three controllers in the first six months of 2006, according to the facility’s FAA manager.
- Two controllers are currently eligible to retire and preparing to leave soon.
OAKLAND AIRPORT AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER
- The facility is authorized to have 33 controllers on board, according to the FAA.
- Currently, there are 27 controllers on board, including 25 CPCs and one trainee. One controller is medically disqualified from working.
- The facility will lose two controllers by next May, including one retirement.
- Eight controllers are currently eligible to retire.
- Over the next 18 months, 19 controllers will reach retirement eligibility.
NOTE: To become eligible to retire, a controller must either have worked 20 years and reach 50 years of age, or worked 25 years and be any age)
