RENO AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL
A Staffing Crisis: By The Numbers
RENO-TAHOE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (RNO) CONTROL TOWER
- The FAA authorizes RNO to have 27 controllers - the tower has only 20 certified professional controllers.
- Two more controllers will retire this year, and three more will become eligible next year.
- By the end of next year, the facility will have slightly over 50 percent of the recommended number of controllers.
- The facility has two trainees – it takes 3-5 years of training for a controller to be able to work all positions alone.
(NOTE: To become eligible to retire, a controller must either have worked 20 years and reach 50 years of age, or worked 25 years and be any age)
