Sacramento Bee: New radar for airport in doubt

Thursday, October 27, 2005

The Bee reports, "Sacramento air traffic controllers cried foul Wednesday over what they say is the Federal Aviation Administration's decision to back off plans for a new ground radar system at Sacramento International Airport... The system, which costs $8 million per airport, enables air traffic controllers to know moment-by-moment what's on the tarmac via radar sensors and in-jet responders...Dennis Kern, local representative for the National Air Traffic Controllers Association,  pointed out that the FAA came here two years ago to survey the Sacramento airport for its own ASDE-X system...'Why are we not on the list?' he said. 'What's going on?'... Air traffic controller Kern said his co-workers in the tower keep track of jets on the runways during inclement weather 'the old-fashioned way,' by radioing the pilots an OK to move forward to the next position on the airfield, then requiring a radio call back when the jet has reached that spot."
