Detroit Free Press: Detroit airport to get safer
Thursday, November 03, 2005
The Free Press reports, "The Federal Aviation Administration plans to install a tracking system at Detroit Metro Airport that will make it easier for air traffic controllers to prevent collisions between planes and trucks on runways and taxiways...The air traffic controllers union has been lobbying for the technology because the equipment controllers currently use has limitations during heavy rain and snow...'To avoid getting all those false readings, we have to put it in a limited mode. So during heavy precipitation and snow, when we need it most, it's not working,' (NATCA Facility Representative Vince Sugent) said...'It's good news. We want this technology at Detroit and many other major airports across the country,' said Doug Church, spokesman for Washington, D.C.-based NATCA."

The Detroit News reports, "Detroit Metro Airport is one of more than a dozen airports across the country that next year is expected to install a new ground radar system designed to prevent collisions between aircraft and other vehicles. The Federal Aviation Administration announced the $8.5 million upgrade Wednesday after controllers in several cities, including Detroit, complained about delays that left them using outdated radar that they said threatens safety...Sugent said the new system, which uses radar and other means to track the movements of airplanes, maintenance trucks and other vehicles around the airport, has been discussed for several years but never implemented."
Associated Press State & Local Wire: Detroit Metro to get new ground radar system
Thursday, November 03, 2005
The Associated Press reports, "Air traffic controllers around the country have complained about the scope of a federal program for installing new radar equipment at airports, including Detroit Metropolitan...The FAA, meanwhile, announced Wednesday that the equipment, which monitors ground movement on or near runways, will be installed at Detroit Metro and 14 other airports around the country beginning early next year...Mark Gries, the union vice president in Memphis, said the equipment helps air traffic controllers better monitor ground traffic during heavy rain or fog. 'Without this technology, when visibility is poor or nonexistent, Memphis controllers can't confirm the positions reported nor spot a vehicle or aircraft that hasn't reported in,' Gries said in a statement."
