Controller Profiles: Greg Wyse
How did you become an air traffic controller? "I was a music major in college and figured it would be a good idea to have something to fall back on in case I didn't get to play with Van Halen. I took the test, went to the academy in Oklahoma City and was assigned to Chicago Center." Describe a typical day. "The majority of my time is spent doing routine sectors. In my area at work, we sequence a lot of Chicago arrivals and work traffic from the coasts." What's the best part of your job? "Working with all of my fellow brothers and sisters." What's the worst part of your job? "Management issues." What are three important characteristics that you believe a controller needs? 1. "Being able to multi-task and prioritize things" 2. "Quick Thinker" 3. "Having thick skin" What's the most challenging situation you've ever had to handle? "The two situations that stand out to me were when I was working a small airplane and he told me he was in severe icing and was going down. I lost radio communications and used another aircraft on frequency to relay clearances to help him safely land. The other was when I was working traffic on that terrible day, 9/11." Where do you go from here? Where do you see yourself in the future? "Right now, I don't have a specific retirement date in mind. I'm focusing more on enjoying my time with my family and pursuing my other interests." Main Menu |
